The island of Maui was left devastated by multiple wildfires that broke out on August 8th. During this time, I saw the pain and sadness this event brought to people I knew. This, combined with witnessing the heroic volunteer efforts and generosity of many different people and organizations during the aftermath of the fires led me to create a club to involve myself and my school community in volunteering opportunities around the island. With this club, I worked with organizations such as the Hale Kau Kau and Ka Ohana Kitchen to feed those in need, the Binhi At Ani Filipino Community Center to cook hot food for 250 elderly people and those affected by the Maui fires, and the Wall That Heals to help families find their loved ones’ names on a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial. This project tested and improved my leadership and communication skills as I set upon organizing different events to attend with my club members. I believe that through this project, I was able to deepen the bonds in my school community and help make a difference in my island community.
