Reflection
This lab is simple in nature, but makes up for its simplicity in the sheer number of questions. The lab has 300+ questions overall, and is focused on really hammering in the correct way to name and write the formulas of ions. This assignment addresses Information Skills. You have to pore over the periodic table in addition to a polyatomic ion chart to be able to find the charges of each ion and balance the formulas as well as calculate the molar mass of each substance. I’m mostly proud of the fact that I was able to finish a sizable chunk of the lab over the course of a few hours. After using the same elements and ions multiple times, I started to memorize some of the charges and formulas of different elements/ions. This allowed me to finish certain questions a lot quicker compared to having to reference the periodic table and other resources over and over again. This lab is pretty cut and dry, so there isn’t really “another” way to do it. I don’t think there’s anything I could work on further. My high school chemistry class really helped me remember different rules for naming formulas, and the polyatomic ions sheet that was given out really helped me as well. Nomenclature is the basis of chemistry. If you don’t know how to name and read the names of substances, then you will not be able to succeed in chemistry.
